Target participants
Renters in various Indian cities, including young professionals, families, and students. Also, consider interviewing property owners/landlords and real estate agents to understand their perspectives and current disclosure practices.
The problem
Renters in India often sign lease agreements without full knowledge of a property's hidden issues, like mold infestations, pest problems, or other structural hazards. This lack of transparency can lead to significant stress, unexpected repair costs, health concerns, or even the difficult decision to break a lease prematurely. They're forced to rely on visual inspections or the landlord's word, which isn't always reliable.\n\nThe challenge persists because there's no standardized, easily accessible, and trusted system for disclosing property conditions before a lease is finalized. Information, if available, is often scattered, unverified, or only disclosed after the fact. Property owners may be reluctant to share negative details, and current rental platforms or agents don't typically facilitate this level of detailed, verified pre-lease disclosure.
Research question
How do renters in India currently attempt to assess property conditions for potential hazards, what specific information do they value most for pre-lease decisions, and what are the primary barriers to accessing trusted, verified data?
