Target participants
Factory workers living in industrial outskirts, shift supervisors, and local auto-rickshaw or van pool operators.
The problem
Industrial clusters in India often sit on the outer edges of cities, leaving factory workers facing long and costly commutes from residential areas. Public transit rarely matches shift timings, forcing workers to rely on expensive private autos or unsafe shared options that eat up a large slice of their monthly wages.
Factories lose reliable labor and face high absenteeism because the commute is exhausting. Solving this requires understanding daily transit hurdles, shift scheduling realities, and what keeps informal worker groups from organizing collective transport solutions.
Research question
What factors prevent factory workers from accessing reliable, low cost daily transport for the first mile of their commute?
